DVPC Court Advocacy Program (CAP) provides support and advocacy for Aggrieved and Respondent women navigating the Domestic & Family Violence Court. The CAP provides information to women which is underpinned by the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act (QLD) 2012 and other relevant legislation.
CAP is located in the women’s support room located on level 1 of the Southport Magistrates Court, operating Monday – Friday 8:30-4pm and at Coolangatta Court Friday 8:30-12pm.
CAP services include:
- offering specialist DFV knowledge, education and information to women and stakeholders;
- risk assessment and safety planning;
- the use of interpreters;
- assistance in the preparation of applications for domestic violence orders, variations to existing orders and information regarding interstate orders;
- explanation of conditions and enforcement of domestic violence orders and their implications;
- pre and post court support, information and referral to other support services;
- liaising with court staff, police, police prosecution, duty lawyers to provide advocacy on behalf of women;
- providing ongoing case management to women between their court appearances
- networking and liaising with local and state-wide agencies to establish and continue to evolve best practice with regard to working with women at court (this may include leading or contributing to the development and maintenance of agreements or protocols); and
- development and/or promotion of information resources specifically designed for women in relation to applying for protection orders and understanding court processes.
- Feedback processes to allow meaningful participation of women in service planning, design and evaluation; and
- strategies are developed and regularly used to determine effectiveness and appropriateness of the service delivery model.
